Pragmatic Web Services Interoperability
Web Services platforms implemented by vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, HP, Sun Microsystems, BEA, and WS02
Nov. 9, 2007 08:30 AM

The recent releases of Microsoft's Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and Oracle SOA Suite together with the evolution of the J2EE Web services platforms are key factors that have significantly increased the number of SOA interoperability scenarios. Although interoperability is just one facet in the SOA proposition, it is one that has become more complex due to the proliferation of WS-* standards, and the evolution of the core SOA standards: SOAP, WSDL, UDDI, etc. Today, ensuring interoperability between the numerous SOA platforms, e.g. Oracle, Microsoft, BEA, IBM, Sun Microsystems, HP-Systinet and WS02, requires that you carefully address issues such as version compatibility, as well as the proper design of service, data, and message contracts. Arguably, one of the most challenging SOA interoperability scenarios are those that involve platforms which have followed completely different evolutionary paths such as Microsoft .NET and J2EE. This session will present best practices, patterns and techniques for proper design of Web Services interoperability solutions. The demonstrations will illustrate practical interoperability scenarios between some of the Web Services platforms implemented by vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, HP, Sun Microsystems, BEA, and WS02. The session will cover interoperability best practices for different SOA architecture styles ranging from SOAP and REST messaging patterns to complex multi-service and multi-vendor interactions using a variety of WS-* protocols like WS-Security, WS-SecureConversation, WS-Addressing, WS-ReliableMessaging, MTOM, etc.

Service-oriented architectures (SOAs) have evolved over the past few years out of the original vision of loosely coupled web services replacing constrained, stovepiped applications throughout enterprise IT. Every major enterprise technology vendor today has developed its own SOA strategy, supported by innumerable mid-size companies and start-ups offering specific SOA aspects or entire solutions. This explosive growth in SOA technology is in response to a global demand--IDC estimates that spending on SOA services alone will grow from $8.6 billion to more than $33 billion by 2010.
