.NET Developer's Journal editor-in-chief, Derek Ferguson, has been named by Microsoft Corporation a "2004 Microsoft Most Valued Professional" (MVP).

The MVP Award Program was established by Microsoft more than eleven years ago. Since then, each year, Microsoft awards MVP status to individuals who are active and credible experts in technical communities worldwide and who demonstrate passion and enthusiasm to share their technical expertise about Microsoft products.

In addition to his editorship of .NET Developer's Journal, Ferguson received the award for his expertise in software development using Microsoft's .NET Compact Framework technology. "Derek's years of evangelism for the .NET Compact Framework - writing, speaking, and developing - have made him a clear choice for recognition as a Most Valuable Professional," said Jonathan Wells, product manager for the .NET Compact Framework at Microsoft Corp, adding that the .NET Compact Framework "is central to Microsoft's vision for its mobile devices."

In addition to his work as editor-in-chief of SYS-CON Media's .NET Developer's Journal, the leading print and online resource for .NET developers worldwide, Ferguson's "day job" is building mobile applications for Expand Beyond, the worldwide leader in mobile software.

"It is a great honor to receive the MVP title from Microsoft," Ferguson said. "I look forward to an even greater role in the Microsoft developer community over the next year or so, as we prepare for the release of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005."

    S. Somasegar, Corporate VP of Microsoft's Developer Division, called Ferguson's receipt of MVP status a "very well deserved recognition and award."

"I am glad to have people like Derek Ferguson being great ambassadors for the .NET Platform and MS technologies and products in general," he said.

Ferguson is one of a handful of Microsoft MVPs specializing in the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework - a key part of the Redmond, WA-based company's strategy in leveraging the .NET Framework on mobile devices.

.NET Developer's Journal covers not just the .NET Compact Framework but the entire gamut of .NET technologies. Each month it brings exclusive high-level interviews with major figures such as Microsoft "Software Legend" Jeffrey Richter, the "Father of C#" Anders Hejlsberg, and the CTO of Eclipsys John Gomez; business case studies such as our ".NET in the Real World" series; and focus issues supporting all Microsoft's beta releases.

.NET Developer's Journal has worked with the BizTalk team (March 2004 issue), the SQL Server team (July issue), and is currently working with the Mobility team for its October issue. Regular issues are also dedicated to allowing members of the International .NET Association, the biggest user group network anywhere, to read about the topics they nominate should receive priority coverage in the magazine.

Chaired by Ferguson and SYS-CON Media group publisher Jeremy Geelan, the .NET Developer's Journal editorial board features numerous Microsoft Regional Directors, including Mobility Editor Jon Box, founder of the Memphis .NET User Group; Open Source Editor John Gomez, CTO of Eclipsys; Gary Cornell, publisher of Apress; Infragistics CEO Dean Guida; Keith Franklin, chief software architect for Empowered Software Solutions; John Sharp, a principal technologist at Content Master Ltd.; Tim Huckaby, CEO of InterKnowlogy; Brian Loesgen, president of the International .NET Association; Scott Hanselman, chief architect at the Corillian Corporation; Patrick Hynds, CTO of CriticalSites; Peter de Betta, independent software consultant; and Mujtaba Syed, software architect with Marlabs Inc.
