IBM Gobbles Up Danish IT Firms

Some companies, if they sought to enter the market for providing consulting services for shipping and logistics companies, would ramp up slowly. Not IBM.

Instead, the New York-based company has just agreed to buy two Danish companies - Maersk Data, the computer services unit of shipping giant A.P. Moeller-Maersk (the world's largest shipper) and DM Data, which is 45 percent owned by Maersk Data.

The deal adds 3,700 employees to the payroll of IBM's ever-growing services division. "The purchase will increase IBM's capabilities in serving clients in the transportation and logistics industry globally," said Gillian Kenny, an IBM spokeswoman.

Services last year accounted for about half of IBM's total anual sales. The Danish deal should be concluded in 3-5 months.
