Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Today sees the launch by San Francisco-based Macromedia of an IDE for its "Flex" presentation server called "Flex Builder."

The goal is to extend the use of Flash, and it is indeed from the Flash community that the company has garnered a number of ideas and built them into the Flex framework, making drag-and-drop building of apps easier, together with enhanced coding support aimed at helping developers learn MXML and ActionScript more quickly.

Flex Builder is modeled on Macromedia's popular Dreamweaver tool. "Flex Builder is to Flex what Dreamweaver is to HTML," as Jeff Whatcott, VP of product management, expressed it.

Asked whether Java developers would necessarily welcome a visual IDE, Macromedia's chief software architect Kevin Lynch replied that they would. "You can still edit and code as a Java developer, but as you're doing it, you see the visual representation of that design come to life," he explained.
