Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

"Sun has a rich heritage of providing what developers need to stay ahead of the curve in enterprise development, including early access to innovative code and free access to industry-standard reference implementations," said Mark Bauhaus, vice president of Java Web Services, Sun Microsystems.

He was speaking as Sun confirmed that there have since March 23, 2004 been over 1 million downloads of the Java System Application Server.

"Developers are making their choice clear," Bauhaus declared. "Now we're driving to the next level of developer productivity to set the bar for the next generation application server deployment." Sun's claim is that its Sun Java System Application Server 8 Platform Edition (PE) is "the industry's first production quality J2EE 1.4-compatible application server" and that it "helps developers avoid proprietary lock-in and rework by using J2EE standards-based development mode, includes support for the Web Services Integration (WS-i) Basic Profile, scales to over 100 CPUs and provides 'five nines (99.999%)' availability."

"Customers who have made a commitment to the Java Platform depend on CA to help them develop, manage, back up and secure their Web applications," said CA's vice president of development, Muhi Majzoub. "By fully supporting this new release of the Sun Java System Application Server environment, CA is making it possible for customers to quickly and safely implement Java-based solutions in their enterprise environments."

According to a new research report published on Tuesday, Sun's application server technologies have accumulated a leading mind share among developers. The report illustrates the growing popularity of application server technologies from Sun including its 35% market adoption among the J2EE platform-compatible application servers in development, putting the Java System Application Server in second place behind offerings from BEA at 40%, but slightly ahead of offering from IBM at 31% share.

Additionally, the Java System Application Server has a solid position in production deployments of 24% market adoption, rated third behind BEA's offering at 39% and IBM's offering at 30%.

The Java System Application Server supports the Solaris 8 and 9 Operating Systems, Windows, and Linux.

If I want a database, I go to Oracle (or increasingly MySQL). If I want an App Server, I go to where they were invented...Sun. I wouldn't go to Sybase for anything - they just lost it to M$.

You want an App Server that scales, is secure, highly available. Try it Asif and judge for yourself.

"the industry's first production quality J2EE 1.4-compatible application server"

What industry is that? Sybase's Enterprise Application Server has been J2EE 1.4 compliant since last year.

Really great !!! Now the time has come that observe the popularity of an app server by its downloads. Why not set up a bench mark and call the vendors of all application servers and set up an independent committe on that ? We will then see how good each application server is and what rank does it have ? Making these sort of claims servers no purpose...

Sun are making some pretty wild market share claims here. According to Gartner, Oracle Application Server is at 19% of the market, a close 3rd to BEA at about 23% (if my memory serves me correctly) and IBM with a bigger slice at #1. I think Sun should stick to selling hardware because that is what they are really good at.

Oh, and another thing... Oracle delivered a J2EE 1.4 compatible platform and passed all of the tests etc. last November. Oracle (at least in South Asia... for which I am responsible) has a far stronger organisation for sales, sales support and post sales support than both Sun and BEA. Our Oracle 10g Application Server product is incredibly good and delivers a far broader solution set than either Sun or BEA ever will. Have a look at the Forrester 2004 Tech Rankings (shows Oracle as a clear leader) and Gartner's magic quadrants (Oracle far in the North East).

So, anyone reading this and considering a decision on either BEA or Sun Appliucation Servers, engage us at Oracle. In fact engage me personally (+6598300889). You will be shocked at what we can do and how superior our platform really is.
