Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Blood To Drip from Oracle's Axe
Oracle Is Expected To Start Firing People Wholesale Today, January 14

With PeopleSoft finally in its pocket, Oracle is expected to start firing people wholesale today, January 14.

Some 6,000 people, mostly PeopleSoft folk, roughly 11% of the total headcount - perhaps as much as 25%-50% of PeopleSoft's staff - are initially supposed to be cut from the combined companies.

Prudential says its contacts think Oracle has let many of the internal line managers in its own applications group go already. It could replace them with internal promotions or with people from PeopleSoft.

Wasting no time, Microsoft formally announced a new migration program for PeopleSoft and JD Edwards customers and partners on Monday.

Microsoft, which is pushing its Great Plains and Axapta stuff, is offering 25% discounts and strategic advice.

Microsoft denied it was much of a competitor when the Justice Department brought suit last year trying to stop the merger.

Certainly many inept and lazy folks will get pink slips. Even more certainly, many talented people will also be cut. PeopleSoft's (and JDE's) long-term successes attest to that.

Best of luck to all the ex-employees - whether PeopleSoft or Oracle. Strange day. TV camera trucks lined up across the street. Think I may one of the few people in the office this early. Last day for me. Bye.
