Chairperson of the Java Community Process Explains How the Java Technology Binary Standard is Managed (Live on SYS-CON.TV)
Onno Kluyt Talks with Roger Strukhoff

Fresh from moderating a lively Keynote Panel at Web Services Edge 2005 in Boston entitled "Web Services and Security," JCP Program Chairperson Onno Kluyt spoke to SYS-CON.TV (http://www.sys-con.tv) in an interview about standards, security, and the role of the Java Community Process program.
Asked why Java technology standards are important to Sun and to the industry, Kluyt replied:
"There are two main reason why Java is popular. People like the programming language - the garbage collection and so on - and the other is the binary compatability ('Write Once Run Anywhere') whereby you write and application and then without change can run it in many different environments."
He continued:
"But to do that you have to have agreement about what the technology is about, what the standards are, and have assurances as an IT manager inside a company that the functionality you receive from your platform vendor - whether it's Sun, IBM, HP, or Nokia for your cellphone - can be depended upon so that you can build your own business solutions against that functionality."

Security was one of the themes discussed in the keynote panel, Kluyt continued. "One of the thing that Web services does is open up your internal business applications to the outside world, to other business partners, or to your employees...so security becomes a very important aspect because basically you are managing your business in the open."
"You have to have - from the protocols that you use and the processes you run - the assurance that you're not going to lose important information," Kluyt said.
The JCP was one of the corporate sponsors of Web Services Edge 2005. At the Keynote Panel moderated by Kluyt, the speakers were both from the purely technology side and the business side. From the Apache Foundation came both Geir Magnusson who represents Apache on the JCP Executive Committe (EC) and the chair of the Apache Web Services Project; from Fujitsu came Mike De Nicola, Fujitsu's JCP EC representative; and from the vendor side was Sun's own Rob Van Hover, senior engineer.
Kluyt was himself a speaker at Web Services Edge 2005, giving a session in the Java track on the JCP Program called "How the Java Technology Binary Software Standard is Managed and Evolves" - a session that explored the circle of adoption and business opportunity from an IT Manager and IT developer perspective.
The session also looked at the role the JCP program plays by carefully focusing on binary compatibility and bringing together the community to agree on standards and the results of this effort - multiple implementations from many sources based on Java technology.
