Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Whatever Will Microsoft Do with Zimbra?
Some of the most scared people inside Yahoo! right now have got to be the open source Zimbra crowd

Some of the most scared people inside Yahoo right now have got to be the open source Zimbra crowd that Yahoo acquired last September for $350 million for its Microsoft-opposing enterprise-directed e-mail and calendaring, folks who just released their webby AJAX-based Collaboration Suite (ZCS) 5.0 this week - and intend to give it a browser-based document-creating and -sharing Zimbra Desktop, called the "world's first offline-capable Web 2.0 collaborative experience."

Somehow we suspect Microsoft may not think e-mail is "broken" like Zimbra, a partner of Red Hat, does, but if Microsoft does acquires Yahoo and you hear a crunch, you can imagine Zimbra's back breaking.

Well, it's an integration challenge at any rate.

ZCS 5.0, which runs on Linux and Mac and is supposed to be an open source Exchange alternative, supports Outlook 2007, the Blackberry Enterprise Server, J2ME-enabled handset like poor Motorola's RAZR and mobile web browsers including the iPhone, and its integrated IM supports multiple conservations and group chats.

The so-called Zimlets in the thing leverage Yahoo's Flickr, Local, Finance and Search properties and Zimbra has the idea it'll be incorporated later this year in the consumer-y Yahoo Mail and Calendar.

There's a free ZCS version, available under the Mozilla license - well, at least the server is - and a commercial one, available on a 60-day free trial

The fact, that Zimbra may not rely too much on a particular Linux Desktop like KDE (and Trolltech, recently purchased by Nokia) but most certainly does on MySQL, recently purchased by Sun makes this really interesting ;-)

The SourceForge project for it should be hard to crush even for Microsoft. At least very small portions of MS's own projects are hosted there now, too.

At first sight, only the user base of Yahoo compared to its total failure MSN or 'MSN 2.0' named MS Life seems like a good reason for the purchase.
Of course nobody knows exactly, if they simply scrap it and replace everything with .NET technology.
On the other hand, why intend to buy a Web 2.0 company for 44 Bio. $ and then throw away some of its most precious gems. Yahoo Messenger for example cannot be the real reason for it. Even compared to MS Life Messenger it is a bad piece of technology. Impossible to handle the most primitive things like a Proxy or Firewall ;-/ Those things have been solved far better by Microsoft or Google.
So the ones really to be scared should be the Messenger team, since MS has its own program already. There only a real merger and possibly even elimination of Yahoo over time is a logic result. Microsoft does not have anything on Linux. Nor is the Mac OS support as sophisticated. So Zimbra seems to have a good chance of surviving under MS Entourage for Mac and Linux or something similar...
