Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Mainsoft Extends C++ Porting Platform to Support Intel Itanium 64-Bit Processor
Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux v 5.2 Supports 21 UNIX and Linux Platforms

Mainsoft Corporation announced that its C++ application porting platform, Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux, Version 5.2 now supports five new platforms, including the Intel Itanium 64-bit processor.  Altogether, independent software vendors (ISVs) can now port Visual Studio applications to 21 UNIX and Linux platforms.

Commitment to Multi-Platform Support
“No single deployment platform dominates today's marketplace, which is why Mainsoft is committed to supporting the leading operating systems and architectures,” said Philippe Cohen, vice president products, Mainsoft.  “With Mainsoft’s porting solutions, customers can continue to build smart-client, Windows-based applications, Web applications, and solutions for mobile devices and deploy them on multiple UNIX and Linux platforms, in addition to Windows.”

Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux, formerly called Visual MainWin for UNIX and Linux, enables C++ developers to write enterprise-class applications in the productive Visual Studio development environment, and deploy them natively on several UNIX and Linux platforms. Version 5.2 introduces support for HP-UX 11i v2 and HP-UX 11i v3 on HP Integrity servers with Intel Itanium  64-bit processors, and HP-UX 11i v3 on HP 9000 servers with PA-RISC processors, as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 for x86_64 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 for x86.  Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux continues to support 16 UNIX and Linux platforms, including Sun Solaris 8, 9, and 10 for SPARC, AMD Opteron, and Intel architectures, as well as AIX 5.3 and 5.2 for the Power architecture.

Mainsoft's proven, systematic porting methodology ensures projects are completed on time and on budget. Turn-key solutions offered by Mainsoft’s consulting services include requirements analysis, detailed project plan, implementation phase, and on-site project delivery.

“UNIX servers will continue to hold their place in the data center as customers trust the security, availability, and reliability that UNIX provides,“ said Brian Cox, director, Software Planning and Marketing, Business Critical Systems, HP. “The ability to port C++ applications onto HP-UX 11i v2 and v3 through Mainsoft for UNIX’s technology will further help customers run mission-critical applications in the best possible system environment.”

Commitment to C++ Development
According to a recent survey conducted by The Code Project, an online community of 4.7 million Visual Studio developers, 46 percent of developers using the Visual Studio IDE continue to use unmanaged C/C++/Visual C++ code.

“Mainsoft is proud to deliver significant business value year-after-year to customers that have standardized on Visual C++, a powerful and flexible development environment, and intend to pursue a cross-platform development strategy for years to come,” added Cohen.  “Marque customers include ESRI, Mentor Graphics, Business Objects, Siebel Systems, and Cadence.”
