The Freebie OpenOffice May Get A Fillip from the Economic Crisis

One gets a bit suspicious when an operation like OpenOffice.com reports that its servers were swamped and knocked offline for days by the pressing demand for the first formal release of its native open source application suite for Mac OS X.

It had no idea how many people would want to download a copy from the beta? Somebody needs to go to summer school and make up Planning 101.

Anyway that’s what reportedly happened starting Monday with the Sun-built OpenOffice 3.0, which doesn’t make Intel-based Apple users install the X11 windowing system.

The widgetry, three years in the making, also reads the file format in Microsoft’s Office 2007 and the $149 Office for Mac 2008 and supports the new anti-Microsoft ODF 1.2 format.

The freebie OpenOffice may get a fillip from the economic crisis. Reportedly 70% of the downloads were for the Windows version.
