Big Communications, one of Birmingham’s top full-service advertising agencies, recently launched a completely redesigned Web site, www.bigcom.com. The site has earned chatter in the industry for tossing out high-concept flash design and instead using the blog publishing application Wordpress.

Wordpress is an open source application that has been popular with bloggers for years. Only recently has it begun serving as a platform to also create and host full websites. The functionality of the application will allow Big Communications to more quickly and efficiently update its site with new news and content.

The new format is also compatible with iphones and most other mobile devices, explains Big Communications Chief Creative Officer Ford Wiles, “We made a few small design sacrifices in order to make the whole site iphone friendly. The choice to use youtube as our video application opposed to the higher resolution media service, vimeo, was based on that goal. It’s important to us, that you can have Big on the go.”

One Birmingham advertising blog reported that Big Communication’s flash-free site is “one giant step for local ad agencies.” The writer also touted Big’s use of youtube for video content and Thickbox pop-up windows.

“We always try and stay on the cutting edge of communications – especially when it comes to emerging technologies,” said Big President John Montgomery. “The days of ‘set it and forget it’ web design are over. Communications are moving faster than ever. It is important that our site is instantly updatable by any member of our staff, web expert or not.”
