NetLogic Microsystems Doubles the Performance and Halves the Power and Die Size of Its Third-Generation Knowledge-based Processor Family, Facilitating High-Performance and Low Cost High-end Enterprise Solutions

NetLogic Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:NETL), the leader in the design and development of knowledge-based processors and high-speed integrated circuits, today announced that it has reached volume production of a complete redesign of its third-generation of knowledge-based processors, moving to TSMC’s advanced 55nm process node. This move allows customers to seamlessly upgrade existing hardware and software platforms, dramatically reducing power consumption while simultaneously offering a significant increase in both performance and functionality, while using less than one-half of the power consumption of NetLogic Microsystems’ previous industry-leading third-generation products.

NetLogic Microsystems has shipped more than two million units of its third-generation knowledge-based processor family, and the migration to the advanced 55nm process node allows customers to extend the life-cycle of their products by up to five years, while minimizing the cost associated with such an upgrade. This move is in-time for NetLogic Microsystems to support customers as they ramp production of new high-volume, high-end enterprise switches. Over twenty customers, including NetLogic Microsystems’ Top 3 customers, have already committed to using this new product family in multiple programs.

In addition to supporting 100% backward compatibility with NetLogic Microsystems’ largest volume-shipping family of NL5512 knowledge-based processors, the NL7512 processor family also includes an expanded instruction set version which includes the powerful instruction set improvements that are currently integrated into NetLogic Microsystems’ industry-leading carrier-class NL71024XT knowledge-based processor specifically targeted at accelerating the processing of IPv6 packets. These optimizations enable existing architectures to more intelligently process packet headers at wire-speed even for the wider and more complex IPv6 addresses. These optimizations deliver a 300% improvement in IPv6 performance when compared to competing third-generation solutions. The expanded instruction set version will target higher ASP sockets, which coupled with the dramatically smaller die size, will maximize NetLogic Microsystems’ profit potential for third-generation sockets, which continue to be upgraded and proliferated in enterprise and other high-performance networking sockets.

The NL7512 knowledge-based processor family leverages NetLogic Microsystems’ internally developed suite of custom circuits optimized around TSMC’s 55nm process node. This suite includes analog and clocking circuitry for high-speed interface, core processing elements and other standard cells, as well as refinement of the design and tape-out flows for this node. As a result, the NL7512 processor consumes less than half the power with a dramatically smaller die size, while simultaneously offering the aforementioned performance advantages when compared to competitive and previous NetLogic Microsystems solutions.

The NL7512 knowledge-based processor is the third NetLogic Microsystems knowledge-based processor to reach production on TSMC’s 55nm process node. In January of 2008, NetLogic Microsystems announced the NL9000 knowledge-based processor, the first hybrid knowledge-based processor including the most advanced features for carrier-class designs including an intelligent load balancing engine, context buffering and algorithmic processing enhancements which deliver the lowest power in the most demanding applications. In April of 2008, NetLogic Microsystems announced the NL566xx NETLite™ processor, also in 55nm, bringing higher performance, lower power and lower cost to the entry-level desktop switching and Ethernet access markets. TSMC’s industry-leading 55nm process node enables NetLogic Microsystems to deliver products with approximately 18% smaller die sizes than 65nm process nodes and 70% smaller than 130nm process nodes, delivering a significantly lower chip cost in high volume production. The smaller chips on the 55nm node also allow for higher performance designs and lower power. With this latest production release, NetLogic Microsystems has now moved the majority of its knowledge-based processor families to the advanced 55nm high-volume process node.
