Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Beceem’s Chip Included in the First 4G Service to Launch in Japan

Beceem Communications, a leading provider of Mobile WiMAX chips, announced today that its 65nm single chip Mobile WiMAX solution is used in a number of the devices that are being launched today as part of the 4G Mobile WiMAX market trial by UQ Communications.

Beceem’s chips are enabling the USB dongles and PC cards developed by NEC Access Technica, and both companies worked very closely with UQ Communications over the past 12 months to optimize the performance of UQ's WiMAX network and devices.

“Beceem has worked very closely with NEC Access Technica, one of our key device partners for the WiMAX service launch,” said Shuichi Kako, Senior Associate VP and GM, Sales Division of UQ Communications. “We have always been able to rely on NEC Access Technica and Beceem during the network deployment and device qualification, and the performance of their devices has reliably met, and in many cases exceeded, our demanding requirements.”

“The UQ network launch, which is the first WiMAX network to use the innovative Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR) pattern, presented an opportunity for Mobile WiMAX chip makers to showcase how advanced algorithms can increase spectral efficiency and coverage reliability of a mobile broadband network,” said Babu Mandava, CEO of Beceem. “Beceem was fortunate to have one of the leading Japanese device partners in NEC Access Technica while working closely with UQ to meet this challenge, and to ensure that our devices provide the highest performance and consume the least power.”

About UQ Communications

The UQ Communications venture was established with KDDI CORPORATION, Intel Capital Corporation, East Japan Railway Company, KYOCERA Corporation, Daiwa Securities Group Inc. and The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd. UQ has received 30 MHZ of spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band for the rollout of Japan’s first 4G network using Mobile WiMAX technology.
