It's a Mobile World
And it's here to stay
Mar. 26, 2009 06:45 PM
Currently we have explosive data growth leading to information everywhere. What is critical is access to useful information anywhere, anytime. End
users want convenience, enterprises want ROI. Wireless now is everywhere and coverage is strong and constantly improving. People can literally work from anywhere today and be as productive out of the office as they would be in the office. Consumer needs are defining what becomes the business need for mobile users. New mobile devices are constantly coming on the market. New operating systems are also emerging as the mobile world evolves. This is a challenge for Corporate IT to constantly support the latest and greatest devices that employees want to use.
I have seen many waves in Mobile Computing...
- #1 Communicate... Mobile Alerts – Thin client, read only, one button response if any Mobile Mail & PIM – synchronising email, contacts, calendar, instant messaging
- #2 Leverage... Mobile Forms – structured input, varied architectures & devices. Browser based Mobile Smart Clients – Combination of forms, local small business logic, access to mobile hardware
- #3 Integrate... Mobile SOA – Mobile Smart Client with access to existing powerful businesses processes
I believe the Core Challenges for Enterprise Mobility are...
- Ease of mobile application development
- Heterogeneous device platform (OS) support
- Support for variety of mobile architecture
- Integration/Access to variety of data sources and processes
- Provisioning and securing applications
- Managing and securing devices
- Host-ability and multi-tenancy
- Work within IT security and management policies
It is obvious that enterprises will increase their employees’ and customers’ productivity by enabling them to access and use information anywhere, anytime, on any device, on any network. Currently companies are realizing that delivery of information technology via mobile phones is a competitive advantage. Employees and customers are increasingly demanding access to information anytime, on any device.
In my honest opinion... Mobile Enterprise Application Platforms to the rescue
