Dont underestimate the SLA's role in accountability. For companies that have dynamic requirements and no down time can be afforded, make sure you have very tight SLAs. For example, OpSource provides a 100% SLA in the cloud and 100%SLA around production application environments. Now 100% is ideally perfect, it comes down to accountability, yo...

Digicel Haiti Celebrates Third Anniversary With 2.1 Million Customers

PORT AU PRINCE, HAITI -- (Marketwire) -- 05/04/09 -- Digicel Group, the largest telecommunications provider in the Caribbean and new entrant to the Central American market, is celebrating the third anniversary of the launch of its business in Haiti with the news that it has achieved a customer base of 2.1 million there.

Digicel's initial investment of US$260 million was at the time -- and remains today -- the single largest investment made by an international company in Haiti.

With its launch in Haiti three years ago, Digicel broke the monopoly of the incumbent providers and changed the mobile landscape on the island forever by bringing a number of firsts to the Haitian people.

Digicel introduced affordable handsets coupled with innovations like free incoming calls and free activations. All of this was backed up by Digicel's promise of best service, best value and best coverage. Mobile phones were no longer an unaffordable luxury only accessible to the lucky and privileged few, but were available to all at a fraction of the cost. Today, Digicel also offers further innovations like Call Me, Blackberry services, Top U Up and CaribFLEX -- all designed to make the lives of mobile customers easier.

With its launch offer, Digicel Haiti attracted one million subscribers in a period of just eight months.

Today, Digicel is proud to serve over 2.1 million customers accounting for over 60% market share and mobile penetration has rocketed in the country from under 5% to over 30% -- largely due to the entrance of Digicel to the Haitian market.

In addition to its activities on the mobile front, Digicel has been instrumental in contributing to the community and improving the island's infrastructure. Examples of this include:

-- the commitment of US$1 million to hurricane relief efforts following
    the storms in 2008
-- a donation of US$100,000 to the NGO "Concern" for the improvement of
school conditions for 4,000 children living in the Cite Saint Martin area
-- the establishment of the Digicel Foundation in Haiti in March 2007
which saw the building of 20 schools in a year -- two in each department of
    Haiti
-- the launch in March 2007 of Digicel Stars which becomes the most
    watched TV show in Haiti
-- sponsorship of the Haiti Football Federation

Colm Delves, Group CEO of Digicel, comments on the success of Digicel in Haiti, "We're very proud of what we have been able to achieve in Haiti to date -- it's a blue print for the Digicel approach to our customers and the countries in which we operate.

"Haiti is a country rich with opportunity and promise. Before the entrance of Digicel, owning a mobile was something most people could only dream of. By making mobile telephony accessible to all, we are changing people's lives -- not only by connecting people to friends and loved ones -- but by enabling them to run their lives and their business in a more productive and rewarding way."
