Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. Sybase iAnywhere Broadens Support of Mobile Device Management Solution
Supports over a Billion Mobile Phones Worldwide

Sybase iAnywhere has announced that Afaria® now supports Open Mobile Alliance Device Management (OMA DM) standards for device management. The latest release of Afaria expands upon its proven, enterprise-class device management and security capabilities by offering OMA DM-based device management functionality for over a billion feature phones shipped worldwide using the native OMA client pre-installed on the device. Afaria provides businesses with a proven, enterprise-class solution that manages and secures a wide array of mobile device types, including laptops, smartphones and now, open standards-based feature phones and PDAs across the entire enterprise, all from a single console.

Afaria now also uses the native OMA DM client to manage Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices, including the popular Nokia N70, Nokia E65, Nokia E71 and the recently announced Nokia E75, as well as all other Nokia devices.

“The relationship with Sybase reinforces Nokia’s business mobility strategy, which is to partner with leading enterprise vendors and create solutions that support the world’s leading device portfolio,” said Waldemar Sakalus, Vice President at Nokia. “As Symbian is the world’s largest smartphone platform, customers are looking for leading device management and security solutions.”

“OMA DM has emerged as a worldwide industry standard for basic device management,” said Marit Ursin, CEO, SmartPhones Telecom AS. “By providing OMA DM services in Sybase’s leading enterprise-class mobile device management solution, our customers are now able to effectively manage and secure all device types across the entire enterprise. Sybase’s platform-agnostic approach and wide spectrum of management capabilities is unique within the mobile middleware space.”

The latest release of Afaria provides the following capabilities via OMA DM:

  • “Clientless” device management using OMA DM standards and technology
  • Ability to initially provision device configurations via SMS using OMA DM
  • Trusted server configuration allowing for silent management of devices
  • Policy Editors to define device configuration settings for GPRS, WLAN access points, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Skinny Client Control Protocol and Cisco Call Connect
  • Over-the-air application delivery, installation and activation
  • Variable substitution from external sources (e.g., LDAP server) allows for personalization of device settings
  • Full integration of OMA DM functionality with the Afaria management console

“OMA is pleased to see this deployment of its DM Enablers in Sybase’s enterprise product,” said Rick Brunner, Chairman of OMA’s Board Interoperability Committee. “This deployment demonstrates further validation of OMA’s broad work in interoperability and its specific success with management objects for provisioning, diagnosing and managing clients for enterprise deployments.”

“As adoption of wireless devices continues to rise within the enterprise, IT managers are facing much greater management and security challenges,” said Joe Owen, VP Engineering, Sybase. “Our new OMA DM capabilities in Afaria provide customers and partners with the industry’s most comprehensive management platform and extensive device support, while enabling them to manage emerging technologies, such as VoIP, with bottom line ROI impact.”

Sybase iAnywhere was recognized as the leader in mobile device management enterprise software for the seventh consecutive year by IDC.1 The full report can be obtained at www.idc.com.
