WOW... There is nobody like Apple to spring a few surprises and yesterdays WWDC 09 Keynote had some interesting announcements. I am not going to go into each in depth as there are enough websites out there that have, blow by blow. See TUAW , Gizmodo , MacWorld , CNet News
First thing to say is, that what most folks were right on, was that there would be no Steve Jobs and secondly what most did not expect was that... we got an iPhone announcement! Read on...
The S stands for SPEED! BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER.. err no that was Steve Austin, but this new device along with iPhone OS 3.0, you should get the idea ;-)
The price for the iPhone3G S is $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB. The iPhone3G 8GB will still be sold at $99
I have also heard that if you can find the 16GB iPhone3G, that too will be reduced in price!
Interesting functionality added to Apple's MobileMe service - "Find My iPhone" which includes the ability to Find your iPhone on a map, message & bleep & Remote Wipe ability to wipe a lost device.
NOTE This should affect the adoption of the iPhone in the Enterprise, though companies like Sybase have already been addressing the issues of secure enterprise data and the wiping of enterprise data for a few months or more. For example check out an interview with Senthil Krishnapillai, Director of Product Management (Mobility) at Sybase on iPhoneCTO called, "iPhone is Here to Stay. What’s an Enterprise to do About it?" .
Senthil is also a speaker at SYS-CON's iPhone Developer Summit, which is being held in NYC on June 22-23. The abstract for Senthil's presentation is..."Business users are actively embracing Apple’s iPhone and bringing it into the enterprise - both through the back door and the front door. iPhone developers have a significant opportunity to help businesses gain a competitive advantage by empowering workers with a true mobile office – secure email, mobilized business processes, and seamless access to back-end enterprise systems. In order to achieve this vision and help companies truly realize the power of the iPhone in the enterprise, a mobile infrastructure is needed that enables enterprises to move away from single ‘one-off’ applications to a more strategic mobile platform."
Disappointing for me
As a school report, I would give Apple 8/10 - Addressing the above disappointments would have given you 10/10.
The big question that is being asked by iPhone developers is...
"How do I get the iPhone3G S? I'm on a contract plan & starting a new plan to run in parallel is not an option!"
We will have to wait and see if Apple & the cellular providers have something planned, like a discount for those already signed up to the Apple Developer Program.
Finally, you have got to hand it to Apple, they have come back extremly strong against the recent Palm Pre announcement. The timing of this announcement, including the price reduction of the current iPhone3G along with the imminent availability of the iPhone3G S in its major markets on June 19, could be a serious body-blow to Palm... as well as sending a tremour across the whole smartphone market.
I am now convinced that the iPhone3G S will break into the Enterprise in a big way, look out BB & WM.
