Rain or shine the people of Philadelphia (and even Mayor Nutter) proved that when it comes to cheering on their favorite team even a tropical storm won't keep them away. From a Giant Pink high heel with wings to a fire hydrant complete with a peeing dog, thirty-four teams swiveled and stumbled their way down the steepest course in Red Bull Soapbox history. It was Swampscott, MA, team Deuces Wild that clinched first place, at 44.7 seconds, with their tricked out baby carriage. Although the booties, bonnets and baby made the soapbox, it was the Michael Jackson impersonator stealing and pushing the stroller that made the crowd roar.

More than 75,000 Chicagoans flocked to North Avenue Beach today to witness 28 homemade, human-powered machines take to the skies at Red Bull Flugtag. Although no flight records were shattered, expectations surely were with an impressive array of vehicles, uniquely talented dancers and an international cast of characters (thank you Canadian team for adding a global perspective). Team Crustacean Avengers took first place with a gravity-defying flight of 120 feet coupled with a skit including one very angry lobster that finally got his revenge on the snotty Swedish chef.

Power Restored to NC Public Power Customers

Power has been restored to nearly all customers of NC Public Power communities. Earlier today, nearly 3,500 customers were without power, although power was quickly restored to most customers. Public power utilities monitored the progress of Tropical Storm Hanna throughout the week and were prepared to quickly respond to any outages. NC Public Power communities work together to restore power as quickly as possible using the Emergency Assistance Program. The Emergency Assistance Program was activated several days ago in anticipation of the storm.

An United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket, on behalf of Boeing Launch Systems, successfully launched the GeoEye-1 satellite at 11:51 a.m. PDT, today. Blasting off from Space Launch Complex 2 here, it marked the second ULA Delta II mission from Vandenberg in 2008. GeoEye-1 will provide the highest resolution of any commercial imaging system -- 0.41-meters or 16 inches for panchromatic (black and white) imagery and multispectral (color) imagery at 1.65-meter resolution.
